Embassy of Health at DDW 23
The wealth in health
Healthcare costs, insurance premiums, risk calculations and efficiency. We are used to thinking about our health and care in a very economic way. Investing in our health preventatively proves to be a complex task and our care only comes into play once health problems have occurred. We approach health in measurable terms as time, money, payments, hard cash: currency also known as valuta. But the word valuta can be traced back to the Latin word “valēre. That meant something like ‘being healthy or strong’. With that meaning in mind, the Embassy of Health asks: can we see our health as a value in itself?

‘The wealth in health’ showcases design examples that demonstrate which values lead towards health and how we can (re)value health as our greatest good. Together we experiment with a (visual) language to think beyond transactions and explore how centralising other, often immeasurable values lead to new solutions and routes towards health.
In the exhibition you will find inspiring visions on a possible future that make us think as well as applied concepts that are already making a difference in practice. Where do values like automation, perfection and efficiency take us? What does health look like when we approach it from the interaction with ourselves and our social, physical and mental environment? And what role do technology and our (informal) care network have in this?
We let go of economic thinking for a moment, look at it from a different perspective and make space for new values. A revaluation that revolves around healthy incentives, where health is put first and accessible to everyone in society.
