Embassy of Safety conference
New safety. Make it fair. Make it together.
Design thinking is a driving force for working together on security in a fair and transparent way. This is what we are working on in the coming years with partners in the Embassy of Safety. During the conference, we will showcase examples of design-based work on safety issues. We invite you to participate and share insights. A new safety does not just emerge, we make it really honest together.
24 Oct 2024 - 09:30 - 12:30

Programme
Welcome speech by Wim Saris, director-general of the Justice and Security Service at the Ministry of Justice and Security.
In his graduation project ‘Escape the Dutch’ at the Design Academy Eindhoven, Daniël Holler manages to expose the dynamics of Dutch WhatsApp Neighbourhood Prevention Groups. With this project, he has been nominated for The Gijs Bakker Award 2024 for exceptional talent. He takes us ‘behind the scenes’ in his research and design process. (In English)
To prevent gun incidents among young people and get a better grip on their online world, strategic design agency Greenberry and the municipality of Amsterdam developed the ‘Lookback’ method. In it, participants compile a timeline with information from people involved prior to a violent incident. Lookback proved to be of great value, but integrating this design-based approach into the security sector also proved challenging.
Can you make this! How manufacturable is social safety in the public sector? Ask yourself under the guidance of social designer and quizmaster Jaap Warmenhoven. Chief engineer-director Ben Huijskes-Nagel of Rijkswaterstaat talks about how he himself was part of a designing approach. And social artist Martijn Engelbregt will take you on the spot in a special safety ritual.
‘The honest conversation with the Ministry of Justice and Security’: Designing for a social task is noble, but that does not make it easy. Learn from the experiences of designing for staff shortages in a justice centre.
Under the title ‘Living Safely Together’, Daniël Krikke is working on an exhibition that explores the themes of security, reintegration and polarisation from the perspective of vulnerable groups such as homeless people and ex-prisoners. Carlo grew up ‘in organised crime’ and talks about what participating in this exhibition means to him.
Moderator of the conference is Tabo Goudswaard, creative director of Embassy of Safety.
