Rainwater towers and (rain)barrel talkers
The project ‘Hemelwatertoren’ (translation: Rainwater tower) by designers Ruben Warnshuis and Katinka Feijs, is part of the Embassy of water exhibition on Ketelhuisplein. The Hemelwatertoren offers an accessible solution for rainwater management in urban areas. The tower encourages residents to disconnect their downspouts from the sewer, so that rainwater can be collected locally and run back into the ground. Simple instructions allow residents to build the tower themselves.

This project prompted us to organise a specific meeting on the theme of disconnection. In which, on the one hand, we examine the rain barrel an sich: when does it really contribute to a climate-adaptive living environment? And on the other: how can we design a process where we don’t look at a few rain barrels, but build a community with thousands of rain barrels and other downspout solutions?
