Opportunities for the Community Land Trust Model in the Netherlands
Together with a group of experts and initiatives, we are exploring what the Community Land Trust model can add to the housing and real estate development landscape in the Netherlands. Community Land Trusts are open membership organizations that use an alternative development model that reflects the interests of the residents and the neighborhood, as well as the public interest. Ownership and management of land, homes and neighborhood facilities is anchored in a CLT organization, and conditions are drawn up for sustainable and social use of it. Due to an ongoing anti-speculation clause and buy-back scheme affordable housing and living are established for this and future generations. It counterbalances the commercial real estate development, rising land and housing prices and the slow ‘pushing out’ of low- and middle-income households.
During the seminar, we will consider various cases (H-Buurt (Bijlmer, Amsterdam), De Haese (Sittard Geleen) and de Ceuvel (Amsterdam Noord), the insights gained from interviews and discussions over the past period, and we will host a discussion with you and some experts on the opportunities for the Community Land Trust model in the Netherlands.

And The People is a social design and innovation studio focused on initiating and realizing projects that inspire and enable people to make change happen. We make people part of and (shared) ‘owner’ of sustainable transitions. We do this from a systems approach in which understanding the motivations, activities, and ideas of stakeholders are put central. From this perspective, we design processes, plan interventions, conduct research, and facilitate events and programs.
