Parallel worlds and spaces in between
Society is changing rapidly, becoming more complex and fragmented. From neighbourhoods changing at a rapid pace to a high level of distrust in government – and at the same time, we still have something to do with the energy transition. Public institutions want to have an impact on the course, but do not always know how. Citizens and entrepreneurs want an active role in shaping their living environment, but don’t always know how either. The Parallel Worlds and Spaces In Between programme organises that how. What does the city look like when the knowledge and skills of migrant communities are the starting point in shaping the public domain?

With collaboration partners such as the Boekmanstichting, Embassy of lnclusive Society, Het Nieuwe Instituut and Gemeente Rotterdam, The Niteshop is organising a coming together of different worlds of knowledge, value creation and capital to answer this question.
A symposium will take place during Dutch Design Week (22 to 30 October), gathering insights from workshops, city walks and interviews. All these components form building blocks for a design research into working in an in-between space. A space where worlds of Urban Culture, policy and cultural institutions come together for a common mission: to influence the most pressing social and ecological transition tasks. Think of the symposium as an interim presentation moment. It will develop further in 2023. Besides stimulating presentations and talks, you can also expect a sound experience and watch the reportage ‘Growing older in the city’ at the Van Abbemuseum (Eindhoven).
