PONT session: Dive into practice with PONT
On Friday 25 October, The Public Design Practice (PONT) invites you to an inspiring morning session during Dutch Design Week. During this event, you will get a glimpse of PONT’s practice research, with political scientist and transition scholar Rik Braams sharing reflections from theory. Together we will explore strategies to make more impact on social issues with a design approach.

In more and more places, a design approach is being used for social tasks, with designers often working together with public organisations. We call these public design practices. PONT investigates and supports some of these practices with so-called impact amplifiers: experienced designers who not only help the practice move forward, but also draw broader lessons. This is how we learn what it takes to work together most effectively.
During this morning session at Dutch Design Week, three practices and their impact amplifiers will present their case studies. They will share not only their successes, but also the challenges they encounter when working in design in public organisations. As moderator, Thijs van Exel, Lead Practices at PONT, will search together with all attendees for strategies to collectively make even more impact on social issues.
To inspire us in this quest, Rik Braams will give a keynote on the values that help transform governments and the unexpected role teddy bears can play in this process.
What to expect:
An inspiring keynote by Rik Braams, and open discussions with designers and civil servants who talk about their successes and challenges in real-life case studies:
- Innovative solutions to staff shortages in correctional facilities,
- A coalition for mobility transition in Amsterdam municipality,
- An in-room educational programme for young people in juvenile institutions.
Expect an interactive conversation between speakers and audience, learning together from both theory and practice.
For who:
This session is intended for people with some experience in using a design-based approach to social issues, regardless of whether you are a designer yourself, client or have some other role. Do you have no experience yet, but are curious about how the perspectives of designers and governments can enrich each other? Then we would like to invite you to our morning session on Thursday 24 October.
