Taste of the Soil | Vaderland x Atelier NL

Vaderland, a nature-inclusive recycling farm located on the Dommel river in Nederwetten, is at the centre of a unique culinary experience during Dutch Design Week 2024 (DDW24). Since 2020, Vaderland, founded by designer Lianne van Genugten and chef Joep Brekelmans, has transformed the historic farm into a place where the cycle of life is central. Here, the soil is nourished and biodiversity enriched, which you taste in pure, honest dishes straight from the land.

During DDW24, Vaderland will open the doors of Atelier NL’s church for an evening dinner as part of the exhibition Meandering Maas. This dinner will let you taste the essence of the fertile soil on which Vaderland thrives. Each dish is a work of art in itself, carefully composed with homegrown produce, and tells the story of nature’s cycle.

Vaderland serves dishes on Atelier NL’s Maas KleiServies (translation: Meuse ClayTableware). The tableware is made from clay excavated in the floodplains of the Maas near Dieden to give the river more space. You literally eat from plates that have their origins in the landscape along the river, bringing the connection between nature and design to life in a special way.

About the exhibition The Meandering Maas

What connects Atelier NL and Vaderland is their love of craft and nature, which comes together in the exhibition Meandering Maas by and at Atelier NL during DDW 2024. While Vaderland connects people with nature through food, Atelier NL captures the beauty and diversity of the earth in their designs. During DDW2024, Atelier NL & Meandering Maas will premiere the Maas Clay Service. During Vaderland’s dinners, you can discover the Meandering Maas exhibition. The exhibition playfully shows how the combination of dyke reinforcement & river widening ensures water safety due to climate change and offers opportunities to enrich the landscape and nature and stimulate local growth.

About Vaderland

Vaderland, developed by Lianne van Genugten and Joep Brekelmans, is a place where nature and tradition come together. Since 2020, they have been transforming Lianne’s parents’ farm into a nature-inclusive recycling farm with a restaurant at its heart. Here, they serve dishes with ingredients from their own garden, and share their vision of nature-inclusive farming to inspire others to contribute to a healthier environment.

You can find more information about Vaderland on their website:  www.vaderland.nu. Also watch the Dommel documentary for a deeper insight into their mission and place.
