Crossing Thresholds Together

Can we look at ‘caring for each other’ and see more than a transaction?

Elderly people often experience physical and mental challenges when their social networks shrink to only those who care for them. The healthcare system cannot solve this problem on its own, and informal caregivers are overburdened – and this will only get worse in the future.

Prejudices and barriers – in both the elderly and society – often get in the way of widening the social network of the elderly. To promote reciprocity in society, a new kind of volunteer is needed to temporarily help (re)activate networks. What can you do for an elderly person in your community right now? And what can this elderly person do for you?

This design research project explores the concept of reciprocity in caring for each other, showing us the power of the ecosystem between people.
