Design Thinking ≠ Doing! — A New Way To Grow
Ideas and visual tools for inclusive dance education.
How can you develop your skills if dance education doesn’t accommodate your unique body and needs?
An inclusive and adaptive teaching methodology is important to recognise and support the diverse needs of all dancers. This collaboration between graphic design studio ST-DUO and inclusive dance company Misiconi focuses on translating Misiconi’s inclusive teaching methods into a set of visual tools. These help dancers develop their artistic autonomy and gain insights into their personal growth.
Experimentation and collaboration with the dancers – a mixed group with and without disabilities – was key to the process. Focusing on young adult dancers with intellectual disabilities and/or learning difficulties, the tools emphasise the power of visualisation for learning and reflection.
The tools include Growth Maps, which use drawing as a conversation starter, Prompt Questions to aid observing understanding, and Goal Cards for visualising progress. The research and prototypes of the toolkit are documented in the publication ‘A New Way to Grow.’
