Nieuwe Vroenten
What role can plant-based food play in smart use of space in the Netherlands? Nieuwe Vroenten is a project transforming 1,000 hectares of rural land into a healthy and sustainable landscape for food and energy production, nature and housing. It shows how we can live within the limits of the planet and what that means for our food and energy consumption.
The project focuses on creating an animal-free, organic and regional food system, without the use of artificial or animal fertilisers. The higher calorific productivity of vegetable agriculture creates space for other uses of the land. A third of the area will become nature and there is space for up to 3,000 homes.
In Nieuwe Vroenten, everyone, from residents to farmers, is co-owner of the project and, ideally, of the land. This also requires future residents to play an active role. What role would you like to take?
The Nieuwe Vroenten project is made by Lola Landscape Architects in collaboration with Katinka Feijs P2, Rabobank en Jaap Korteweg.
