Where is your nose?

All children should be able to experience stories on an equal footing. Lotte Meeuwissen explores the role of the other senses in the visually dominant world we live in. ‘Where is your nose?’ helps children connect language to experiences they have with the sense of smell.

Where is your nose?

Inclusive reading table

In the Dutch language, there are many words that help us express what we see. At the same time, there are few words that describe what we smell.  This project teaches children to communicate more about experiences they have with the nose.

Giving scents a role in storytelling encourages reading pleasure and promotes equality between children with and without visual impairment. Importantly, scents are not there to merely entertain, but add new information to a story. As a result, children learn to read more critically and realise that the scents are there for a reason. You give children ownership and show that their imagination and interpretation matter.

The inclusive reading table brings children a multi-sensory experience of a story. From 19 to 27 October 2024, the inclusive reading table will be in the Eindhoven Library. Children can drop by all week to smell, read (Braille), and do inclusive crafts at the reading table. The reading table and activities are entirely designed for children with a visual impairment. This way, all children can participate in an equal way.
