Wall Reef

Urban Reef explores and presents innovative, 3D-printed façade modules made from circular clay, such as locally sourced dredged material, that contribute to biodiversity and climate adaptation in cities.

These modules create diverse microclimates and habitats essential for the urban ecosystem. The stackable structures consist of three different typologies: water-retentive elements that connect to downspouts and provide living space for algae, moss, insects, and snails; open elements that offer shade, for example, to smaller insects; and dense components with shelters for birds and bats. With these modules, Urban Reef aims to enhance ecosystem services such as water retention, cooling, sound absorption, and carbon sequestration. By integrating these bio-receptive modules into urban façades, not only is the urban heat island effect reduced, but ecological potential is also increased.
