Our society is increasingly confronted with challenges of great complexity. Issues that affect everyone, for which there are no ready-made answers. Think of climate change, the agricultural and energy transition, the housing crisis, and an ageing population.

These societal challenges are systemic issues that can no longer be solved by simply sitting down together and letting the process unfold organically. They require a structured approach, centred on design capability and space for experimentation.

This is why Embassies exist.

Embassies are coalitions of the willing, working together as equals toward a shared mission from a forward-looking perspective. Participating partners identify a common issue, project, or theme to tackle concretely. Design capability plays a crucial role in shaping a new perspective.

Through a year-round programme, a showcase during Dutch Design Week (with approximately 300,000 visitors), and exhibitions, talks, and expeditions, the outcomes and insights from this design-led research are shared and developed further. In this WDE 2023 aftermovie, we offer you a brief overview.

‘If you really want to achieve new things, you also need a new perspective. And designers can outline that perspective all too well. They are eminently capable of looking and thinking apart from the system.’
Alex Datema Director Food & Agri Rabobank
‘Designers keep asking until they reach the bottom of it.’
